Program Overview
Everything you need to know about our Skin Care Specialist program
The curriculum for students enrolled in the Esthetics Skin Care Specialist Course (CIP Code 12.0409) consists of 900 clock hours, focusing on both technical instruction and practical operations. Students will engage in 600 hours of foundational Esthetics practices, along with 300 hours of advanced techniques.
Technical instruction includes demonstrations, lectures, and examinations, while practical operations emphasize real-world application on clients. This course is designed to ensure students are fully prepared to meet the standards set by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

Cosmetology Act/Board Rules & Regulations
The Barbering and Cosmetology Act as well as the Board's Rules and Regulations and safety measures.
Cosmetology Chemistry for Estheticians
Chemical principles as they apply to esthetics and skin care treatments.
Health & Safety
Knowledge of hazardous substances and training in chemicals and health in establishments, the use of material safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals and preventing communicable diseases.
Theory of Electricity in Esthetics
Study of the effects of different electrical apparatuses on the skin, both manually and chemically, as well as safety precautions when operating equipment.
Disinfection and Sanitation
Proper procedures to protect health and safety, proper disinfection procedures and disposal of equipment, and sanitary conditions.
Bacteriology, Anatomy & Physiology
Recognition of bacteria and prevention of communicable disease, structures and functions of the human body systems.
Pathology
Study of diseases of the systems, client history, indications, contraindications, and endangerment sites.
Facials - Manual
Skin analysis, cleansing, scientific manipulations, packs and masks.
Facials - Electrical
The use of all electrical modalities and apparatuses, including dermal lights.
Facials - Chemical
Peels, packs, scrubs, and masks.
Eyebrow Arching & Hair Removal
Removal of unwanted hair using tweezing, waxing, and depilatories.
Makeup Application
Understanding of shade and undertone, application of foundation, eye and face shapes, and proper application techniques.
Corrective Makeup & False Lashes
Application of corrective makeup and false eyelashes including strip and individual.
Traditional Massage Techniques
Introduction of Swedish Massage and Reflexology.
Reflexology
Introduction to reflexology techniques and pressure point therapy for the feet and hands.
Additional Spa Services
Proper application of wraps, scrubs, aromatherapy, and additional body treatments performed in spa settings.

Communication skills including professional ethics, salesmanship, and business information.

Academic Requirements
Grading standards and graduation requirements
Grading System
Students will be tested and receive a letter grade after the completion of each theory course. Tests are typically graded during class, and results recorded on the student's individual grade sheet.
Students will be tested on their Basic Practical Operations at the end of the freshman class hours and upon evaluation by the Freshman Class Instructor and will be approved to graduate to work on the clinic floor.
Esthetician-Skin Care Specialist students will be assessed at 450 and 900 hours and receive a grade as outlined in the S.A.P. Students will receive a copy of their progress report upon the completion of each evaluation period.
- Letter Grades:
- •90% to 100% = "A" Excellent
- •80% to 89% = "B" Good
- •70% to 79% = "C" Average
- •60% to 69% = "D" Needs to Retake Test
- •0% to 59% = "F" Failed
Students need to retake all tests with scores below 70%. Students must maintain a "C" average for successful progression and graduation.
Overall grades are determined on the basis of the student's attitude and ability to perform elements of the course curriculum: approximately 25% written tests, 50% attendance, and 25% practical performance skills.
Students who meet the minimum for attendance and academic progress shall be considered to be making SATISFACTORY PROGRESS until the next scheduled evaluation. Students who do not meet such requirements shall be deemed to be either (1) Under Warning (2) Not Making Satisfactory Progress/On Probation.
Graduation Requirements
- Complete all required classroom and practical/laboratory education and training with a GPA of no less than 70% ("C")
- Complete an SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) evaluation
- Complete an exit interview with administration
- Pay all tuition due to the school prior to graduation (unless written arrangement made)
- Receive diploma/certificate of completion upon graduation
Licensing Requirements
The applicant must be 17 years of age or older and have completed the 10th grade. A license will be granted by the State of California only after the student has successfully completed and graduated from the course and passed the licensing exam with an overall average of 75%.
