The International School of Beauty Cosmetology Program prepares students for a career as a Hair Stylist, Hair Colorist, Manicurist, Make-up Artist, and Consultant on Beauty and Personal Appearance. Whether you want to be a Beauty Salon Manager, Owner, or Cosmetology Teacher, this program provides the skills needed. You'll also gain expertise for roles like Supervisor, Director, or even Beauty and Cosmetic Sales positions.

The curriculum consists of 1000 clock hours of technical instruction and practical operations, covering all essential aspects of cosmetology in accordance with Section 7316 of the Barbering and Cosmetology Act.

Health and Safety

Including instruction on hazardous substances, chemical safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases. Includes Board Approved Health & Safety Course (B&P 7389) covering hazardous substances, basic labor laws, and physical and sexual assault awareness.

Including instruction on disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician, and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments.

Including instruction on coloring, straightening, waving, bleaching, hair analysis, predisposition and strand testing.

Including instruction on arranging, blow drying, cleansing, curling, dressing, hair analysis, shampooing, waving, and non-chemical straightening. Hair cutting includes the use of shears, razors, electrical clippers, trimmers, and thinning shears for wet and dry cutting.

Including instruction on chemical and manual facials, massaging, stimulating, exfoliating, cleansing, or beautifying the face, scalp, neck, or body using hands, esthetic devices, cosmetic products, antiseptics, lotions, tonics, or creams that do not result in ablation or destruction of live tissue.

Hair Removal and Lash/Brow Beautification

Including instruction on tinting and perming eyelashes and brows, applying false eyelashes (strip and individual), and removing superfluous hair using depilatories, tweezers, sugaring, non-prescription chemicals, or waxing.

Academic Requirements

Grading standards and graduation requirements

Grading System

Students will be tested and receive a letter grade after the completion of each theory course. Tests are typically graded during class, and results recorded on the student's individual grade sheet.

  • Letter Grades:
  • 90% to 100% = "A" Excellent
  • 80% to 89% = "B" Good
  • 70% to 79% = "C" Average
  • 60% to 69% = "D" Needs to Retake Test
  • 0% to 59% = "F" Failed

Students need to retake all tests with scores below 70%. Students must maintain a "C" average for successful progression and graduation.

Overall grades are determined on the basis of the student's attitude and ability to perform elements of the course curriculum: approximately 25% written tests, 50% attendance, and 25% practical performance skills.

Cosmetology students will be assessed at 250, 500, 750 and 1000 hours.

Graduation Requirements

  • Complete all required classroom and practical/laboratory education and training with a GPA of no less than 70% ("C")
  • Complete an SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) evaluation
  • Complete an exit interview with administration
  • Pay all tuition due to the school prior to graduation (unless written arrangement made)
  • Receive diploma/certificate of completion upon graduation
  • Students who have reached the minimum age of 17 years will be assisted in completing the necessary documents to file the appropriate Barbering and Cosmetology examination

Licensing Requirements

The applicant must be 17 years of age or older and have completed the 10th grade. A license will be granted by the State of California only after the student has successfully completed and graduated from the course and passed the licensing exam with an overall average of 75%.
